The power of grape seed

If there was such a thing as a youth and wellbeing ‘holy grail’ for women, many would argue the humble grape would fit that very description, writes naturopath Jennifer McLennan.

Grape seeds are packed full of antioxidants and plant nutrients that protect cells, blood vessels and skin.

Grapes have many naturally occurring compounds that have been studied, but the most well-researched components of grapes are the oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs). These compounds are found in the skin and the seeds of grapes, and they are well noted for their numerous health benefits.

Varicose veins and capillaries
Varicose veins are extended, dilated veins seen near the surface of the skin, and they can look dark blue and twisted.

OPCs may strengthen the walls of capillaries by helping to strengthen collagen. Fluid can permeate into the tissues from the capillaries in those who suffer from varicose veins and can lead to aching and tired legs, but OPCs are thought to stabilize the capillary walls and help prevent fluid escaping.

Fluid retention
Aching legs due to lots of standing, and even itchiness have also been improved from grape seed extract containing OPCs. As well as helping with fluid retention from varicose veins, OPCs may help with fluid imbalances from a variety of causes. A clinical trial showed that women suffering from premenstrual bloating, heaviness and weight gain found relief from taking grape seed extract containing OPCs.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
Cells in the body undergo free radical damage on a daily basis. Grape seed extract has a strong antioxidant action which may protect:

Skin cells from UV radiation
Brain cells from free radical damage, therefore enhancing memory and promoting healthy brain function in the elderly
The cardiovascular system. Grape seed is thought to have anti-platelet properties which may decrease plaque build-up in the arteries

Skin
Grape seed extract provides free radical protection to the skin, and its elastin and collagen boosting effects on skin fibres may help prevent some aspects of skin ageing.

The effects of OPCs are believed to be stronger than those of vitamin C, E, and betacarotene on cells – good news for those of us who want to help fight free radical damage.

How to get grape seed extract
To get the best benefits from OPCs, take grape seed extract in supplement form.
